Whether you’re heading to leafy Cullompton in the heart of Devon for a day out, a weekend away or just passing through on the M5, discover the best spots to stop and enjoy a cup of coffee.
In this blog I’m sharing my top 10 tried and tested coffee shops from living in the area – from rustic farm shops to elegant manor houses and cosy cafés, there’s something for everyone!
As you can see from the map below – they’re all under 20 minutes from the centre of Cullompton. Read on to discover all 10!
1. The Lime Tree
Location: Cullompton
First up, I would say this is the best coffee shop in the centre of Cullompton. Only opened in the last couple of years, it’s the newer kid on the block serving delicious coffee, tasty baked treats and brunch options.
The café itself is super comfy with some sofa seating as well as tables and chairs to relax and watch the world go by. The owners and staff are also incredibly friendly and welcoming – all around a great coffee stop!
2. The Bakehouse
Location: Cullompton
Just across the road is The Bakehouse – another fantastic option if you want to stick close to town. The Bakehouse is very well loved in the area and for good reason. Set in one of the traditional old high street shops, the historic setting is the perfect place to sip coffee and try their range of delicious cakes or sample their breakfast and brunch menus.
The atmosphere here is really cosy with seating in the front of the shop as well as tucked around the back – all draped with fairy lights and candles for a warm and cosy feel.
3. Fordmore Farm Café
Location: Cullompton
Just outside Cullompton is renowned organic farm, Fordmore. Originally established in 1942, the farm has continued to grow with the launch of their farm shop, stocking only the finest local produce and opening the doors of their dedicated café.
Set in the farm grounds, it’s a really lovely spot to grab a coffee and breakfast before browsing the farm shop and hunting for the on-site goats roaming around.
4. Steamer Coffee House
Location: Willand (just outside Cullompton)
Another newer addition is Steamer’s, named after a steam engine that fell over there and caused quite the stir in 1906. Today, it’s their tasty coffees being stirred and bacon rolls eaten. This is a super family friendly spot with some kids’ play space so if you are heading over with younger children this is a great relaxed option.
If you’re wanting a quieter escape minus the little ones then maybe head to another spot in this list.
5. The Dovetail Cafe (in The Antique Village)
Location: Hele (a tiny village just outside Cullompton)
If you love your coffee with a side of history and antique shopping then look no further than Dovetail Cafe. Set within the sprawling Antique Village, you can sip your delicious coffee by their roaring open fire, sat on an antique sofa.
Once your caffeine craving has been satisfied, take a wander around the rest of the store and explore the full range of antiques.
6. The Old Well Garden Centre
Location: Uffculme
Speaking of shopping… if you’re in the market for plants, gardening supplies or lovely gifts then The Old Well garden centre is your perfect coffee stop. Amongst the plants you’ll find their lovely popular little café serving great coffee alongside baked treats like warm scones and tea cakes.
7. The Orangery Café (in Bridwell Park)
Location: Uffculme
For a more stately experience, the beautiful country house estate of Bridwell opened the doors of their sun-soaked orangery when it was converted into a coffee shop in 2020. This pretty spot is stunning on summer days (and really any day!) as the light floods the space. Their coffee and small selection of cakes and pastries are delicious too!
8. The Swans Neck Café (Halberton Farm)
Location: Tiverton
Heading back to another fantastic farm shop is Halberton’s family-run site just outside the historic town of Tiverton. Their cosy little café serves great coffee and homemade pies, cakes and tarts with beautiful indoor and outdoor seating overlooking their farm.
As this is a more rural setting, it’s definitely muddy boot and dog friendly so perfect after a long walk. Just don’t forget to check out the local produce in the farm shop afterwards!
9. Stables Coffee Shop (at Killerton House)
Location: Killerton (just outside Cullompton)
For more of a day out, head to the National Trust owned, Killerton House. In the entrance to their extensive grounds you’ll find the Stables Coffee Shop (as well as the gift shop and a second hand book shop) serving coffee as well as cream teas, sausage rolls and more.
You could easily spend a morning or afternoon on the property exploring and walking after your caffeine hit. But if you’re not a National Trust member and don’t want to pay the entry fee, don’t worry, you can still access the café without paying to enter.
10. Heron Farm
Location: Honiton
Last but by no means least is Heron Farm – the award winning vineyard with a beautiful walled garden, architectural cafe and some of the best local food and drink. The coffee is no exception – expect high quality flavours and service in a stunning setting.
That’s a wrap! Those are my favourite spots in and around Cullompton to head to when the caffeine craving hits. Have you visited any of these? I’d love to know which is your favourite or if there are any coffee shops you think I’ve missed – please let me know in the comments.
