1. Morgon Coffee Roasters
Opening hours:
Mon – Fri: 8am – 4pm
Sat – Sun: Closed
We’re kicking things off across the harbour at Morgon Coffee Roasters. This hidden gem was started by two seriously experienced baristas who’ve competed in coffee making competitions, worked in many coffee shops and helped found other roasteries. So you know Morgon Coffee is going to be off to a good start!
As their rave reviews confirm, the coffee is indeed fantastic and as this is a working coffee roaster too, you can actually see the coffee being made behind the scenes. There’s also plenty of seating indoors and outside with views across the water. So if it’s a sunny day you can sip your coffee and catch some rays. For a little sweet treat, don’t miss out on their freshly baked cookies, still warm from the oven.
Overall, this is a lovely spot with some of the absolute best coffee in the city!
2. Gringo Nordic Coffee Roasters
Opening hours:
Mon – Fri: 8am – 4pm
Sat – Sun: Closed
Slightly southwest of the city, you’ll find our second excellent coffee roaster – Gringo Nordic. This really is the place to come if you want to try new coffee flavours and roasts with speciality coffee exclusively from small independent plantations.
Their slow and steady small-batch hand roasting process makes for the perfect balance of flavours and visiting their store you can see the roasting first-hand. Their space is also super modern, fresh and fun with really friendly staff who curate a welcoming environment.
…and if you’re wondering where the name came from – Colombian farmers affectionately called the owners Gringos when they visited and it stuck!
3. Alkemisten
Opening hours:
Mon – Fri: 7:30am – 5pm
Sat – Sun: 10am – 5pm
In a couple of spots around the city, you’ll find community focused Alkemisten. Their handful of cosy coffee shops are designed to feel like a hug with plush comfy seating, soft lighting, comfort food and hot tasty coffee.
From a morning coffee to brunch and lunch, you could easily relax at Alkemisten all day. In fact, while we were visiting Gothenburg on a rainy day, we sought shelter from the elements in Alkemisten for hours. So if you’re looking for the perfect spot to just take a breath, chat with loved ones or read a good book then this is it!
Plus, if you get a little peckish, their toasted sandwiches and selection of cakes and bakes is fantastic!
4. Mahogny Espresso Bar
Opening hours:
Mon & Fri: 7:30am – 6pm
Tue – Thu: 7:30am – 6:30pm Sat – Sun: 9:30am – 5pm
Closer to downtown Gothenburg you’ll find Italian-inspired Mahogny. This smaller spot is great for grabbing a quick coffee with a side of Italian sweet treats. From chocolate filled croissants to pistachio cannolis, authentic flavours you might not think you could find in the heart of Sweden!
With a small selection of indoor seating, you can also seize this as your chance to take a little break from sightseeing and chat to their friendly team.
5. Café & the Bakery
Opening hours:
Mon – Thu: 7am – 5pm
Fri: 7am – 4pm Sat: 8am – 3pm Sun: Closed
One of the most unique spots to get your caffeine fix is Café & the Bakery. As the name suggests, this is a coffee shop and bakery in one where everything is freshly baked on-site. From loaves of incredible bread and buttery cinnamon rolls to fluffy muffins and traditional Swedish semla.
Head down into the rustic and cosy café often lit by candles to feast on the best baked goods while you sip your freshly brewed coffee.
6. BodyBuddy Café & Bakery
Opening hours:
Mon – Fri: 7:30am – 3pm
Sat: 10am – 4pm Sun: Closed
If you’re in the mood for something a bit lighter, fresher and healthier (no judgement here!) then Stockholm’s favourite BodyBuddy may be the one for you. This well-loved local chain recently opened a café in Gothenburg and it’s just as popular here.
With a beautiful light and bright interior, BodyBuddy is a stylish spot that’s ideal for breakfast, brunch, lunch or refuelling post-workout. Alongside tasty coffees you can sip on juices, shots and smoothies for a vitamin boost. Then sample their delicious menu of waffles, salads and bowls, all made with the finest gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free ingredients. So not only is this spot ideal for a healthy boost but those with dietary requirements too.
7. Tony’s Coffee Bar
Opening hours:
Mon – Fri: 7am – 6pm
Sat – Sun: 9am – 5pm
Closer to iconic Liseberg amusement park you’ll find another great taste of Italy. With fantastic quality Italian coffee, incredible focaccia sandwiches and a range of sweet Mediterranean treats, this is Tony’s.
The classy spot has seating indoor and out so you can make the most of great weather or warm up inside on chilly days.
8. Caféva
Opening hours:
Mon – Wed: 9am – 7pm Thu – Fri: 9am – 6pm
Sat: 11am – 5pm Sun: Closed
Last but by no means least is a very special spot. Caféva is a really cute and cosy café sat on the pretty cobbled streets of Haga – Gothenburg’s well-loved old town. Enjoying a coffee here is like stepping back in time with embroidered table cloths, warm bench seating and comfy armchairs.
While the coffee choices may be a little more limited here, it’s still delicious – especially when paired with a homemade cake or bowl of steaming soup. So allow some time to sit back and take it all in!
That’s a wrap – those are the best spots to enjoy a cup of coffee in the beautiful city of Gothenburg. I hope you enjoy your time here as much as I did and if you have any of your own favourites to add, please let me know in the comments. Happy travelling!
