A note on safety:
As you might have already read about Santiago or seen mentioned in the reviews for some of these hotels, safety is a key word in the city. For me this is something to take with a pinch of salt. While travelling around South America, we were often told about how dangerous Santiago was and it started to actually stress us out. As we were flying into the city, we wondered if it was even a good idea to go…
But we were pleasantly surprised. While of course every city has it’s dodgy parts, we didn’t feel unsafe at all in Santiago. Now that doesn’t mean you should be careless but every hotel in this list is in an area deemed ‘safe’ for tourists taking normal safety precautions. So you can feel confident about staying in these areas and also know that every hotel will generally have security staff, gates or even keys and cards to access the building.
I think Santiago’s safety situation gets a lot more attention as it has changed over the last decade. There’s been an influx of migrants from across the continent which has put a strain on resources, increased political unrest and created more desperate situations that can turn nasty. But despite rising crime figures, it’s still statistically one of the safest cities in South America. It’s the change from an absolute peaceful haven to having some level of crime that’s rightfully concerning residents.
So keep that in mind when planning your trip and don’t be put off visiting. Just exercise usual precautions like not travelling with excessive valuables, keeping an eye on your belongings at all times, not walking far at night and where possible, avoid taxi scams by using Uber or other ride hailing apps.
