Is Hornbæk worth visiting?

First things first, if you’re only visiting Denmark for a few days, you might be wondering if taking the time to visit Hornbæk is actually worth it… The answer really depends on what you’re looking for. If it’s a taste of the ultimate Danish summer and golden beaches then there’s no better place than Hornbæk. But if you’re after history, bigger sights and more culinary experiences then you’ll probably enjoy places like Roskilde, Dragør or Helsingør more.
Hornbæk really is the laid back summer town where Danes escape the city and cool off in the blue waters. So don’t expect to find many tourists here! It’s beautifully off the beaten track, irresistibly tranquil and one of my favourite places in the country.
Where is Hornbæk?
If the Danish Riviera sounds just as appealing to you as it did to me, then your next question is probably – okay, where even is it? As you can see from the map below, Hornbæk is nestled on the north coast of Zealand – the same island as Copenhagen. Which is why it makes such a great day trip from the capital as while it may look a little far on the map, it’s really pretty close and easily accessible.
Its position across the water from Sweden also makes for more sheltered conditions and gives you great views of the neighbouring country. Plus, if you want to explore further, there are other lovely coastal towns around Hornbæk that make up the rest of the Danish Riviera. So you could easily turn this into a weekend trip or overnight stay.
How to get to Hornbæk
The good news is, like most places in Denmark, it’s super easy to travel there with public transport. If you’re coming from Copenhagen it only takes 1.5 hours on the train.
Simply take the regional train towards Helsingør and then hop on the local train for 25 minutes straight into Hornbæk. As the regional train follows the coast and the local train takes you through the woodlands, it’s also a really pretty journey. You can buy your tickets at every metro and train station or online in advance here.
Of course, you can also drive from Copenhagen or other parts of Denmark if you have a car. The drive takes about an hour, again following the main E47 road up to Helsingør and then peeling off onto route 235 or 213 into Hornbæk. There are a couple of car parks in the town close to the beach.
When to go
That leaves just one final question before we get into the itinerary – when should you go? As Hornbæk is at heart a beach town, the best time of year to go really is summer. As you can see from the table below, that’s when you’ll have the best chance of sunny and dry warmer days. It’s also when the sea is the warmest for the most enjoyable swimming (although don’t expect Caribbean temperatures!)
So for the best experience, I’d recommend visiting between July and early September when you can make the most of those long summer days.

| August | 21°C | 14°C | 8 days |
| September | 17°C | 11°C | 9 days |

| November | 7°C | 3°C | 10 days |

Best things to see & do
With just one day to spend in Hornbæk, here’s what I’d recommend for the ultimate experience…
Relax & swim on the golden Hornbæk Beach

After grabbing a coffee and pastry (see recommendations in the next section), it’s time to head to the star of the show – Hornbæk beach’s miles of golden sand. The wonderful thing about this beach is not only is it absolutely beautiful and pristine, but it’s also pretty quiet. Unlike the beaches around the centre of Copenhagen, you won’t find lots of people here, just a delightfully tranquil space.
So lay out your towel or picnic blanket to relax and take it all in. If you’re wanting a little extra shelter, head into the dunes for the sunniest still spots, or dive into the water for a swim to cool off. There’s also often a lifeguard on duty during summer which is an extra reassurance if you’re travelling with children or not so confident in the water.
Wander Hornbæk harbour

After soaking up the sun, head down the beach to the pretty harbour. While this may be quite a small spot, you can get some lovely views and find some great restaurants and cafés. There’s also a couple of more sheltered swimming spots here so if you don’t fancy the waves, take a dip closer to the harbour.
Stroll the beach path through the dunes

After lunch, take a stroll along the picturesque beach path. This runs behind the dunes both east and west along the coast and gives you glimpses of iconic white Danish summer houses and sweeping views out to sea. If you head east, you can wander through a small woodland and find more stretches of beach and a perfect dog park beyond.
Explore Rudolph Tegner’s Museum & Sculpture Park

After a stroll (and most importantly, an ice cream), round out your day admiring the incredible work of one of Denmark’s most famous sculptors – Rudoph Tegner. Tegner attended the Academy of Fine Arts in 1893 before embarking on a lifelong career in sculpture which showcase dramatic scenes and are often larger than life.
Today, you can visit the countryside estate he bought together with his wife to turn into a sculpture park and museum. It’s a really interesting place set across heather-covered hills. To get there from Hornbæk takes just under 40 minutes with a short local train ride to Dronningmølle and 2km walk. Or you can drive there in under 15 minutes.
Entrance to the sculpture park is free and it’s open all year around. To enter the museum, you do have to buy a ticket which costs £9 per person. You can find all museum opening hours here.
Best places to eat & drink
When it comes to the best baked treats, coffees, ice cream and lunch stops in Hornbæk, here are my top recommendations and must visit spots.
Albis Kaffebar & Second Hand Store $
For the best coffee in town, choose Albis. Not only is this a super friendly family-run spot but it’s also so unique. Set in an old house, you can sit back and enjoy your coffee in a vintage cinema lounger, aeroplane seat or rustic bench while browsing their antique wares.
Bagt $
For the best baked goods in town, head to Bagt. Here you’ll find their mouth-watering range of sweet pastries, Danish classics, bread and savoury bakes fresh from the oven. Grab a treat while it’s still warm and head down to the beach.
Hornbæk Is $
For the best ice cream, head to the most loved spot in town – Hornbæk Is. With freshly made waffle cones, a whole range of delicious flavours and extra toppings there’s a lot to love about this place. Just don’t forget, when they ask if you want freshly whipped cream and strawberry jam on top – the only answer is YES! 😂
Det Fedtede Hjørne $$
For lunch and dinner, my favourite place is the food market. Here you’ll find a range of stands offering excellent quality food and flavours from around the world. From Indian curries and Argentinian steaks to Danish hot dogs and Mexican burritos, there’s something for everyone.
Plus, there’s a great little bar, plenty of seating under strings of lights and a really fun atmosphere – what more could you want!?
What to pack & know before you go
As with any new destination, there are always helpful tips to know in advance. Here are just a couple of lessons I learned that I think will make your trip all the more enjoyable.
Pack light layers for breezy days: As you’ll find when exploring most of Denmark, as it is such a flat and coastal country, the wind can pick up. So I always recommend taking a light jumper or jacket even in summer as while the temperatures can be warm, if the wind is blowing you’ll quickly cool. So come prepared and if you need to, head into the dunes for the sunniest sheltered spots.
Don’t mind the jellyfish: During the summer months, you might start to spot jellyfish in the waters around Zealand. Don’t panic! The small mostly white clear jellyfish with four pink rings on top known as Moon Jellyfish don’t tend to sting. When I first saw them blooming in the water I was definitely concerned. But after watching many children happily picking them up and playing with them, I’ve since swum alongside them without a care in the world! 😂 Of course if you spot a jellyfish that doesn’t match that description, it’s always worth doing a little research or asking the lifeguard on the beach if you need to take precautions. But in general – jellies are no problem!
Get comfortable: To make the most of your day in town, I’d really recommend coming prepared to get comfortable. So pack that picnic blanket or extra towels, a good book, a pack of cards, water toys and more. Whatever it is you like to have for the ultimate beach day that keeps you comfortable and brings you joy!
How much a trip to Hornbæk costs
Now you know how to spend the perfect day in Hornbæk, the final question is just how much to budget for your trip. Again, the good news here is a trip to Hornbæk can be as affordable or luxurious as you want it to be. As all of the activities are free, it really comes down to how much you spend on food and the cost of your transport into town.
If you’re taking public transport from Copenhagen and settling into a delicious picnic lunch on the beach with some fresh bread from the bakery then expect to spend as little as £10 on your day trip. But if you’re wanting to treat yourself a little with lunch at the food market and some extra coffees and pastries then expect to spend £40 or more.
There we have it – that’s my ultimate guide to visiting the beautiful Danish riviera town of Hornbæk. I hope you love your time here as much as I did and if you have any questions about Hornbæk or wider Denmark drop them in the comments box below and I’ll do my best to help. Happy travelling!
