Best Destinations For Couples
Kicking things off, let’s look at where to head if you’re craving quality time with your partner. Cue the pretty cityscapes, romantic strolls and cute cafés…
1. Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Nearest Airport: Luxembourg (LUX)
Best For: Couples
Price: £££
Why Go?
Luxembourg is the much overlooked neighbour of France, Belgium and Germany. Packed with incredible restaurants, pretty parks and nature and vineyards just a short trip from the capital – it’s my top choice for 2026.
Now I know what you’re thinking – but isn’t it expensive? The short answer is yes. But it can be done on a budget and it’s worth it. Just make the most of their completely free public transport system and opt for simple but delicious lunches of fresh baguettes with cheese and you’ll free up cash for drinks at sunset.
2. Odense, Denmark

Nearest Airport: Billund (BLL)
Best For: Couples
Price: ££
Why Go?
Next up is the sleepy fairytale land of Odense in Denmark. West of Copenhagen, this lovely city is the birthplace of famous storyteller Hans Christian Andersen and the museum dedicated to his life is a must visit.
Spend the rest of the weekend strolling pretty streets, watching the water volleyball teams play in the port at sunset and grabbing incredible street food at the evening food market.
You can find my list of the best coffee shops in Odense here.
3. Bologna, Italy

Nearest Airport: Bologna (BLQ)
Best For: Couples
Price: ££
Why Go?
I’d argue it’s hard not to feel romantic in Bologna. The medieval city is that beautiful and just oozes art, architecture and relaxation.
Spend your long weekend here sipping fine wines, taking a walking tour of the old city walls and feasting on fresh pasta by candlelight. Need I say more…
4. The Cotswolds, England

Nearest Airport: Bristol (BRS) or London Heathrow (LHR)
Best For: Couples
Price: ££
Why Go?
My final favourite for couples is the cosy Cotswolds. I may be biased here as I currently live here… But I can confirm, the Cotswolds are just as pretty and magical as they look in photos. With old stone buildings, pretty English gardens and so many stunning walks, you could easily spend a long weekend here and only scratch the surface.
All you need to do is book a cute cottage on AirBnB, get a reservation at a fantastic pub for a Sunday roast and lace up your shoes for a walk in the hills.

Best Destinations For Adventure Seekers
If it’s thrills and adrenaline you’re looking for, here are my top picks for hiking, mountaineering, rafting, via ferrata and more!
5. Sarajevo and Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Nearest Airport: Sarajevo (SJJ)
Best For: Adventure seekers
Price: £
Why Go?
Kicking things off with a Balkan gem that’s gaining in popularity. Bosnia & Herzegovina is a beautiful country that played a big role in history and is blessed with an incredible natural landscape.
With four national parks, countless waterfalls and white water rapids that are perfect for rafting, it has something for everyone. Plus, it’s still a very affordable destination and you’re likely to find food and accommodation for much better prices than neighbouring Croatia.
6. Bergen, Norway

Nearest Airport: Bergen (BGO)
Best For: Adventure seekers
Price: £££
Why Go?
For more walking and mountain climbing, Bergen is a great choice. You can scale Mt. Ulriken and enjoy a coffee at the top while you take in the views. Or opt for longer hikes between Mt. Ulriken and Mt. Fløyen to take in more of the area.
Then rest in the traditional town packed with wooden frame houses, shops and accommodation. The only thing to note is this is a more expensive option so be prepared to splurge a little.
7. Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), Wales

Nearest Airport: Manchester (MAN)
Best For: Adventure seekers
Price: £
Why Go?
On the other hand, Snowdonia National Park, now known by the Welsh name Eryri, is an excellent wallet friendly option that’s packed with outdoor adventure opportunities.
Whether you choose to climb Yr Wyddfa (Mt. Snowdon) or tackle surrounding peaks like hair-raising Crib Goch or exhilarating Tryfan – there’s options for all abilities and fear-factors.
Just book into a lovely local BnB and pack your hiking gear for an epic weekend outdoors. Plus, discover my list of the top 10 coffee shops in Eryri National Park to get your caffeine hit.
8. Grindelwald, Switzerland

Nearest Airport: Zurich (ZRH)
Best For: Adventure seekers
Price: £££
Why Go?
My final top adventure destination for 2026 is Grindelwald in Switzerland. This really is an adventure mecca. There’s heaps of options for adrenaline junkies including cliff walks, canyon swings, glacier hikes and toboggan runs.
Plus, surrounded by the mountains, it’s a stunning alpine destination with great food too!
Best Destinations For Culture Connoisseurs
Now for those seeking a dose of cool local life, fantastic people watching and soaking up the vibes – these are my must-visit spots for 2026.
9. Ghent, Belgium

Nearest Airport: Brussels (BRU)
Best For: Culture connoisseurs
Price: ££
Why Go?
In Belgium, Brussels and Bruges tend to get all the attention, but my favourite city is actually Ghent. Not only is it quieter and more authentically Belgian but it’s stacked with quirky coffee shops to watch the world go by.
Spend a leisurely long weekend here visiting the castle for a dose of history, strolling the trendy shops and markets and drinking some of the best coffee around.
10. Hamburg, Germany

Nearest Airport: Hamburg (HAM)
Best For: Culture connoisseurs
Price: ££
Why Go?
Another place you just want to hang out is northern Germany. Beyond Berlin and closer to the border with Denmark, you’ll find Hamburg’s post-industrial beauty. Strikingly modern new buildings rise from amongst the traditional brown brick of this warehouse district.
Spend a couple of days here enjoying sunset from the concert hall, walking 24m under the river in a historic tunnel and eating at the fantastic restaurants.
11. Tallinn, Estonia

Nearest Airport: Tallinn (TLL)
Best For: Culture connoisseurs
Price: £
Why Go?
Sat in the Baltics, Estonia is often overlooked as a destination for quick breaks. In a long weekend you can appreciate Estonia’s unique island culture, viking heritage and Nordic influences.
Plus, Estonia is super affordable so if you find you’re having a great time, maybe your long weekend could become a week long adventure!
12. Mälmo, Sweden

Nearest Airport: Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH)
Best For: Culture connoisseurs
Price: £££
Why Go?
Just a short hop from Copenhagen, Mälmo is the ultimate chilled out city. Away from the bustle of the capital and sat on the coast, you can spend a long weekend here soaking up the sauna culture, enjoying fika (Swedish afternoon tea) and strolling town.
Just be warned – the best sauna complex is completely nude! But don’t let that put you off – it’s an awesome experience and makes for a unique travel tale…
13. Haarlem, Netherlands

Nearest Airport: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
Best For: Culture connoisseurs
Price: ££
Why Go?
Think of Haarlem as the cooler sibling of Amsterdam. With museums and galleries packed with world-famous art, some of the best restaurants and that canal-side vibe, it’s a great choice to see more of the Netherlands outside the capital.
Best Destinations For History Lovers
If travel is also an opportunity to learn, you’ll love these destinations – packed with history, both recent and ancient.
14. Edinburgh, Scotland

Nearest Airport: Edinburgh (EDI)
Best For: History lovers
Price: ££
Why Go?
The capital of Scotland is jam-packed with history. From medieval architecture to monuments, memorials and of course the famous castle, there’s so much to see.
Take your time exploring, try the obligatory local favourite haggis and make sure you leave time to hike up Arthur’s Seat for incredible views across the city.
15. Belgrade, Serbia

Nearest Airport: Belgrade (BEG)
Best For: History lovers
Price: £
Why Go?
Now if you’ve spent any time in Europe, you will have seen A LOT of churches, but I think Belgrade has the most beautiful and impressive church I’ve ever visited. With an interior almost entirely coated in gold and the most stunning mosaics, sights like the Church of St. Sava are a must-visit.
Combine that with the Nikola Tesla museum, Belgrade Fortress, the Museum of Yugoslavia and many more – Belgrade is a city with a whole lot of history. Plus, travelling Serbia is pretty affordable and the people are so lovely!
Fancy exploring beyond the capital? Discover my complete guides to two of the best Serbian cities for day trips: Novi Sad and Subotica.
16. Bratislava, Slovakia

Nearest Airport: Bratislava (BTS)
Best For: History lovers
Price: £
Why Go?
My last recommendation for history buffs is Bratislava. The city served as the capital of Hungary for over 200 years until 1784 and the main gothic cathedral has seen the kings of Hungary crowned. Fast forward to the 20th century and it was the capital of Slovakia in the first Czechoslovakian republic and remained so after gaining independence.
The main castle is a brilliant place to start your long weekend and start soaking up all this incredible history!

Best Destinations For Foodies
One of the best parts of travel is getting to try new foods. If you’re a foodie like me, here are the spots you should hit in 2026!
17. Copenhagen, Denmark

Nearest Airport: Copenhagen (CPH)
Best For: Foodies
Price: £££
Why Go?
Cardamom knots, cinnamon buns… Need I say more? Copenhagen is the home of mouth-watering pastries and high quality barista coffee served in magazine-worthy cafés.
A long weekend spent well here would include strolling from palace to museum to riverside swimming spot via as many coffee shops and bakeries as possible.
18. Porto, Portugal

Nearest Airport: Porto (OPO)
Best For: Foodies (and wine lovers!)
Price: £
Why Go?
Not only is Porto architecturally stunning, but it’s home to some of the best restaurants and port houses. Meaning you can sample Portuguese treats like delicious fresh grilled sardines and flaky Pasteis de Nata (Portuguese tarts) while sipping heady local port wines at sunset.
Seriously, what more could you want!? This place is a taste sensation and filled with gorgeous streets to wander.

19. Lyon, France

Nearest Airport: Lyon (LYS)
Best For: Foodies
Price: ££
Why Go?
Think of Lyon as the less crowded, more relaxed and more affordable Paris. Sat on the convergence of two rivers, it’s packed with riverside restaurants, pretty cafés and incredible bars.
Spend a weekend here cycling along the river stopping to try delicious treats and taking in the views.
Best Destination For Beach Breaks
Now, if it’s just a good old fashioned dose of sun you’re after. I had to include one of my favourite spots with guaranteed good weather – perfect for breaking up a cold winter!
20. Split, Croatia

Nearest Airport: Split (SPU)
Best For: Beach breaks
Price: ££
Why Go?
Last but by no means least, if it’s guaranteed sun, blue waters and sandy beaches your after then Split is the one. With a beautiful old town, a harbour-side packed with tasty restaurants and cafés and a choice of golden beaches it’s the ultimate relaxation spot.
Plus, you could always spend a day on a nearby island. Simply hop on the ferry to the natural beauty, Hvar for even more chill vibes and fewer crowds.
