Lake Skadar at a glance:

Where is Lake Skadar?

First things first, you’re probably wondering exactly where Lake Skadar National Park is. As you can see on the map below, it’s in the south of Montenegro on the border with Albania – the lake is actually half owned by Montenegro and half by Albania.

It’s convenient location just a short trip from the capital, Podgorica makes it an ideal day trip or stop on your itinerary and at 44km long and 14km wide there’s a whole lot to explore. The lake and surrounding small towns and islands have been protected as a National Park since 1983 and added to Ramsar Convention’s World’s List of Wetlands of International Importance in 1996.

Is Lake Skadar worth visiting?

I think this blog speaks for itself – the answer to this question is a big fat YES! Lake Skadar is a truly unique landscape that has so much to offer travellers. Here are four key reasons I would recommend a stop here:

Natural beauty

With open stretches of lily pads as far as the eye can see to mountains on the horizon, Lake Skadar has views like no other. It’s one of the most unique landscapes I’ve visited where wetlands meet mountains and sipping a delicious local wine while watching the sunset is just perfection.

Wildlife haven

Not only are the wetlands pretty but they’re packed with different species of fish, birds and reptiles. Lake Skadar is one of the biggest bird reserves in the whole of Europe with 270 species and even some of the last Pelicans on the continent! There are also 34 native fish species, tortoises wandering around town and we saw a few snakes during our time there too. So if you’re looking for wildlife spotting opportunities, Lake Skadar is a great choice and makes for fantastic photos.

Delicious local food & wine

This fertile sunny land is perfect for growing grape vines which has helped develop it into a hidden gem wine region. After a day exploring on the lake, you can head to a vineyard for wine tasting. Accompanied by fresh local fish dishes caught that day – it’s a foodie’s dream!

Crowd-free!

Lastly, it’s still wonderfully off the beaten track. So you’ll get more of a taste of local life, more easily find accommodation and tables at local restaurants as fewer tourists make it over this way. Which makes for a more authentic experience and means it’s still on the cheaper side too which is a win-win!

Best time of year to visit

Lilypads on Lake Skadar, Montenegro

The best time to visit is in summer when the lake’s lilies are flowering and the wildlife is most active. Specifically May to early October as you’ll have the best weather too. Throughout these months you can expect dry, warm and sunny days while winter is much wetter and cooler. You can find the full range of average temperatures by month below to help inform your decision.

How to get to Lake Skadar

Train to Virpazar, Montenegro

Now you know when you’ll be booking your trip to Lake Skadar, it’s time to look at how you’ll get there. The main town and transport hub is Virpazar. Getting to Virpazar is generally easy and you can get there from Podgorica or Kotor as detailed below…

Travelling from Podgorica

By Train (Best Option)

Travelling from Montenegro’s capital by train is probably the easiest of them all. There’s a direct line straight to Virpazar that only takes around 30 minutes and costs €1.50. Just look for the train from Podgorica to Bar that stops at Virpazar.

Just note – there is a twice-daily train from Podgorica to Belgrade via Bar that doesn’t stop at Virpazar so don’t accidentally get on that one! You can find the full timetable here.

Once you arrive at Virpazar station follow the footpath along the road to the right for about 5 minutes and you’ll be in the town. On the way back to the station, our AirBnB host actually gave us a lift which was lovely as the path is quite close to the road. It’s always worth asking if your host or guest house will pick you up or drop you off.

By Bus

Travel by bus from the capital will take around the same amount of time – half an hour. You just head to the main bus station in Podgorica to pick up the route and you can buy tickets for €3 in advance here.

By Car/Taxi

If you’re hiring a car for your trip it’s again about a half hour drive from the capital. If you opt for a taxi it’s likely to cost between €20-€25 but you can reduce this cost by travelling in a group.

Travelling from Kotor

By Bus

To get the bus from Kotor you’ll need to take a first bus to Bar and then change bus there to get to Virpazar. Overall this will take about 2.5 hours. You can find the full timetable and book your bus tickets here.

By Car/Taxi (Best Option)

Your other option is to drive yourself if you’ve rented a car – this takes about 1.15 hours and is super easy. The other option is to get a taxi or private transfer. This is actually what we did on the way to Virpazar, we asked our AirBnB host if he would be willing to drive us for a fee. He took the two of us the door-to-door journey in comfort for €40 which was ideal.

You can book a private transfer here starting from €28 per seat but again the cost will come down if there are more than one or two of you. But I would recommend asking your host / hotel if they recommend anyone as you’re likely to get a better deal.

How long to stay

View of Lake Skadar, Montenegro

To soak up the landscape, explore the major sights and taste the local dishes I’d recommend at least 48 hours in Lake Skadar. You could easily spend a week here but I think two or three days is ideal to get a flavour of the place and experience the best of the National Park.

We had two nights in Virpazar and it was the ideal base to explore the key things we wanted to do but could easily have extended our trip to relax a little.

Best things to do in Lake Skadar

Now you know when you’re headed to Lake Skadar and for how long it’s time to think about your itinerary. There are lots of different activities and experiences you can enjoy in the National Park – here’s my top selection…

Take a lake boat trip

Boat tour on Lake Skadar, Montenegro

If you only do one thing in Lake Skadar, it has to be taking a traditional boat tour to see the wildlife up close. You can book a tour from one hour up to an entire day. From experience, I’d say you’ll need at least two hours as once you’ve got to the best wildlife spots you’ll want to watch the birds for a while and explore other areas.

There are lots of providers offering tours and you can easily book them once in Virpazar but I’d recommend having a look in advance to get the best tours. Here are some of my favourites…

Boat tour to Grmožur Island €10pp – This island is essentially Montenegro’s Alcatraz – prisoners who couldn’t swim were sent there and guards had to make up the inmate’s sentence if any prisoner escaped. A pretty historic place you can now get closer to on a boat tour.

Boat Tour to Kom Monastery €20pp – Again on an island, this monastery was built in 1415 and has some of the best preserved frescoes that you can admire of any church in the area.

Lake Skadar Cruise and Crnojevića River €30pp – To get those famous river bend views, you can take this tour and sail onto the pretty river from the lake.

Kayak on the lake

To slow things down and really explore the lake at your own pace, you can also rent kayaks to explore the lake on your own or as part of a guided tour. In a smaller, slower and silent boat, you’re likely to be able to get closer to nature for incredible birdwatching opportunities.

You can rent your kayaks in Virpazar from Boat Milica for €5/hour for a single kayak and €10/hour for a double. Learn more and book here. Or you can join some brilliant guided kayak tours – a wildlife focused tour or a history and beaches tour.

Go wine tasting

Grapevines in Lake Skadar National Park, Montenegro

After a long day of exploring, you’re probably ready for a rest amongst the grapevines and a glass of something delicious. Luckily for you, Lake Skadar is also a haven for wine lovers. You can visit the beautiful wineries around the area on your own for a private wine tasting or join a group trip to experience more vineyards in a day. Here are the best options:

Private wine tastings

Cermeniza Winery – This is the winery we chose for a private tasting in their wine cellars. We just messaged the owner, Nemanja Djurisić ahead of time to book in for the afternoon and tasted four delicious wines for €10 per person which was perfect. Nemanja talked us through their process and explained the flavours we were tasting. I would highly recommend stopping here as it was a great service, super friendly and the wine was delicious!

Vinary of Ivo Uksanovic – There’s also a more rustic local option with a family run winery. This is slightly further out of town on the family’s beautiful vineyard and you’ll get to see more of the process of making the wine. Message to owner to book.

Guided wine tasting tours

Winery Garnet – You can join a group tasting at this beautiful winery, tasting three local wines and one fruit liqueur with snacks for €43 per person.

Explore Besac Fortress

Besac Fortress, Lake Skadar, Montenegro

From Virpazar you can also easily walk to Besac Fortress to explore the ruins and get great views across the lake. The fortress was built in 1478 by the Ottomans and then transferred to Montenegrin control in the 17th century. In WW2 the Italians also used it as prison after which it was abandoned.

You can wander the grounds and climb the tower that still stands for a couple of Euros. There’s also a small café and wine museum on site if you fancy a drink or bite to eat.

Rent bikes & do a self-guided cycle tour

Another great way to explore the lake is by bike. Some accommodation comes with free use of bikes to get around or you can rent them from Outdoor & More in Virpazar for around €10/day.

There are plenty of cycling routes that will help you see more of the area and you can pick up maps of the trails and helmets with your bikes.

Hike to the best viewpoints

Lake Skadar viewpoint, Montenegro

There are walking trails all around Lake Skadar and you can pick up maps of the best and safest routes from the visitor centre in Virpazar. The closest view points to Virpazar are the Circular Viewpoint, Viewpoint Skadarske Jezoro and Vidikovac Godinje observation deck which you can walk to in 30 – 40 minutes from town.

You can also join guided hikes with small groups like this waterfalls and springs of walnut valley tour which passes spring-fed pools for swimming and a honey farm for lunch.

The most famous viewpoint where you can see this classic bend in the Crnojević River is Pavlova Strana is actually further out of town. To get there, you need to head towards the small town of Rijeka Crnojevića and set directions to Pavlova Strana Viewpoint. It’s about a 50 minute drive so I’d only recommend it if you have your own rental car or can get a reasonable price taxi.

Relax on the beach & swim

After a day of activity you’ll probably be ready to relax a little. For this, the closest beach to Virpazar is Godinje Beach (15 minutes drive or 1.5 hour hike) or head to the famous beach in Murici which is about 50 minutes drive away.

You can swim in many parts of the lake but if you’re not on a boat or kayak tour it’s probably easiest to head into the water from the beaches. They’re great spots for chilling at sunset and catching the last of the day’s rays.

Explore monasteries

Lastly, there were 60 monasteries around Lake Skadar and several of them remain today and can be explored. Most date from the 15th century and played important roles in local history. The main ones that you can visit are Kom Monastery, Beska Monastery, Starcevo Monastery, and Moracnik Monastery.

Best places to stay in Lake Skadar

Sunset over the mountains in Lake Skadar, Montenegro

There’s a whole host of accommodation options in Virpazar and the surrounding area. From fantastic value apartments and hotels to luxury villas, there’s something for every travel style. Here’s my round up of the top three places to stay for each budget…

Budget: JOCKER (€43 per night)

Jocker apartment, Lake Skadar, Montenegro

For the best value quality stay, look to an apartment like JOCKER. Just outside the centre of town, you have the entire one bed apartment to yourself including a sunny garden and terrace that overlooks the lake. At under €45 it’s a fantastic option for couples or small groups on a budget and the reviews speak for themselves!

Mid-range: Villa Semeder (€52 per night with two-night minumum stay)

Villa Semeder, Lake Skadar, Montenegro

Next, slightly more expensive is Villa Semeder. This is actually where we stayed and it was one of the best apartments we stayed in during three months of interrailing. Not only does it have an incredible view of the mountains from the balcony but it’s absolutely spotless, spacious and has everything you could need for your stay including complementary use of two bikes.

It is slightly further out of town but an easy 10 minute cycle to the shop and restaurants.

Luxury: Eco Resort Cermeniza (€117 per night with two-night minimum stay)

Eco Resort Cermeniza, Lake Skadar, Montenegro

If it’s full pampering and relaxation you’re craving, the winery and eco resort, Cermeniza is the one for you. It’s just stunning. From the views and pool to the wine cellars and quality of the service it’s just a fantastic spot. Plus, you can make full use of their delicious on-site restaurant and wine tours with the owner – but more on that in the next section!

Best places to eat & drink in Lake Skadar

Zoran Fish Restaurant $

Right on the waterfront this rustic restaurant serves super fresh fish like local carp. The portions are generous, the views are great and it’s really affordable. A great relaxed and easy lunch or dinner option.

Boat Restaurant Silistria $$

This restaurant in the centre of Virpazar is actually on a boat. Think pirate ship vibes but combined with great food. You’ll find classic burgers, chicken, chips and salads alongside more traditional food so there’s something for everyone. They also have a great drinks menu so if you just fancy sitting and watching the world go by with a cocktail, it’s an ideal option too.

Restaurant Pelikan $$

Traditional Montenegrin restaurant serving classic dishes at super reasonable prices. According to the reviews the service is great too and it’s in the heart of Virpazar so easy to access for lunch or dinner.

Konoba Demidžana $$

Just along from Restaurant Pelikan is this delicious restaurant offering traditional food alongside European favourites for variety. The interior is modern and sleek with great views over the water.

Cermeniza Restaurant (Eco Resort Cermenzia) $$$

Last but by no means least, as I mentioned earlier, the Eco Resort also has an on-site restaurant that serves delicious fresh salads and local fish. Set in their beautiful grounds overlooking the mountains it’s a more luxurious choice but if you choose to stay there, it’s the perfect place to dine. Or treat yourself on the last night of your trip!
